Groningen (2010-2013):
Van Dijk made his professional debut on 1 May 2011, coming on as a substitute against ADO Den Haag. Just weeks later, he scored his first professional goals—netting twice against the same opposition in a Europa League play-off.
His career nearly ended before it truly began. Shortly after his 20th birthday, Van Dijk was admitted to hospital with advanced appendicitis, peritonitis and kidney poisoning.
