Origins
Kevin Yakob was born on 10 October 2000 in Gothenburg, Sweden. His Assyrian parents originally emigrated from the Nineveh and Mosul regions of Iraq, and from a young age, they instilled in him a deep connection to his Iraqi roots.
“I was born in Sweden, but my parents always taught me about my Iraqi roots. Football has the power to connect different cultures and backgrounds, and representing Iraq is something that means a lot to me,” he said.
Yakob initially progressed through the Swedish youth system, earning caps for Sweden’s U18 and U19 teams. However, the passionate support of Iraqi fans from his teenage years, combined with a strong desire to honour his cultural heritage, ultimately led him to choose Iraq.
The Professional Forge
BK Häcken & Early Career (2018-2021):
Yakob began his professional career in Sweden with BK Häcken. It was here, at just 19 years old, that he suffered his first serious ACL injury. The recovery took an arduous 473 days. During this period, he had a loan spell at Utsiktens BK from August to November 2020. Despite the setback, he won the Swedish Cup with Häcken in the 2018-19 season.
IFK Göteborg (2021-2022):
